Transmission Service and Repair

Automotive transmissions are responsible for transmitting power from the engine to the wheels, allowing the vehicle to move. There are several types of transmissions, including automatic, manual, and continuously variable transmissions (CVT).

In an automatic transmission, the gears change automatically based on the speed of the vehicle and the amount of power required. A manual transmission requires the driver to shift gears manually using a clutch pedal and gear shifter. A CVT uses a system of belts and pulleys to continuously adjust the gear ratio, providing smoother acceleration and improved fuel efficiency.

Common failures of automatic transmissions can include slipping gears, delayed engagement, harsh shifts, and failure to shift. Manual transmissions may experience clutch problems, grinding gears, or difficulty shifting. CVT failures can include belt or pulley wear and malfunctioning valve bodies.

To diagnose transmission problems, a technician will typically perform a visual inspection and road test to identify any obvious issues. They may also use diagnostic equipment to check for error codes or test the transmission's hydraulic pressure. If the issue cannot be easily identified, the technician may need to perform more in-depth testing, such as removing the transmission pan to inspect the internal components.

Once the problem has been diagnosed, the technician will determine the appropriate repair or replacement procedures. In some cases, minor repairs such as replacing a solenoid or sensor may be sufficient. More severe issues may require a complete transmission rebuild or replacement. In either case, the technician will need to carefully disassemble and inspect the transmission, replacing any worn or damaged components before reassembling and testing the unit to ensure proper operation.
